Author Elle Brooks Interview by Susan Whitaker

Tell us the name of your books that are currently available?

Promises Hurt is my debut novel and will be available to download from 2nd August 2014

Can you tell us your name and a bit about yourself?

Elle Brooks: Female, 31, 5ft6” – GSOH Likes long walks on the beach and… wait wrong interview!

Ok, so I’m a little neurotic. I drink way too much coffee. I love to run, it’s where I do my thinking. I read so much that I now feel naked if I’m not holding my kindle, and I’m a complete shoe whore! Obsessed is not a strong enough word.

When and why did you begin writing?

I’ve always wanted to write a novel. It’s been on my bucket list for as long as I can remember. I started writing last year, when I turned the big 30…I had a mini emotional meltdown that I was no longer in my 20’s and some guy called me ma’am for the first time! I realized that I wasn’t getting any younger and I’d always said that I would write a novel before I was 30. Fail! So one night after drinking way too much wine, I found myself sitting at my Mac and daring myself to do it. The rest is history.

What inspired you to write your first book?

Bucket list aside, I was inspired by other Indies, I figured that they had all been brave enough to take a chance, and so should I.

How did you come up with the title of your book or series?

I wrote half of the book before I realized that the title was staring me straight in the face! It really wasn’t a case of trying to dream one up, it was just there.

Who is your intended audience and why should they read your book?

I never actually intended for anyone to read the book, it’s all just kind of happened. I wrote the type of story that I love to read. I’ve always been a huge fan of Romance, YA and New adult. Although lately I’ve wanted a little more steam than your average YA provides, but not so much that it pushes a New Adult read into the realms of Erotica. I think Promises Hurt sits on the line of not having sex define the book, yet having enough to keep it within the boundaries of New Adult.

So I guess by default that is my target audience, anyone that loves a good romance that isn’t solely focused on sex. Doe’s that even make sense? I’m confused. What was the question?

Who is your favorite character from your book and why?

That’s like picking your favorite child!  Um…okay, apart from my leads, my favorite has to be Brie. I think that if she were real we’d be friends; she’s feisty and fun with just the right amount of crazy.

How about your least favorite character?  What makes them less appealing to you?

This one is hard to answer without giving anything away and turning into a spoiler. (It’s a good job this isn’t a face to face interview because I’m sitting here mute!)

Okay my least favorite is Frank Jamison. He’s an asshole of epic proportions. He’s hot tempered and quick to judge. Neither are appealing qualities.

What was the hardest part of writing your book?

There are quite a few scenes that although are dramatized and written fictitiously, were inspired by true events that I have experienced. I wont say which ones; but yeah, I was a little emotional writing those.

If you could change ONE thing about your novel, what would it be?  Why?

I wouldn’t change a single thing. Regardless of whether the book is received well, or people don’t like it. I’ve stayed true to myself.

Give us an interesting fun fact or a few about your book or series

90% of the book was written under the influence of enough wine to comatose a whale.

The characters in Promises Hurt are not based on any real-life individuals, but their character traits may or may not have been borrowed from some of my friends and family. I’ll die before I admit which ones though.

I intended to write a light hearted fun story… turns out the alcohol made me a little emotional and it shone through in my writing…the emotion, not the drink!

Whilst writing your book did you have much support from family and friends?

I wrote Promises Hurt in secret!

Do you have any unique talents or hobbies?

I can turn my eyelids inside out, and fit my whole fist into my mouth…doe’s that class as unique or just gross?

What can we expect from you in the future?

I have so many different book plots outlined at the moment…Just expect more. After the conclusion of ‘The Promises Series’ of course.

What can readers who enjoyed your book do to help make it successful?

Review it!

If you loved it, review it. If you hated it, review it. JUST REVIEW IT!

PleaseJ

Do you have any tips for readers or advice for other writers trying to get

published?

I’ve self-published, it’s the best thing I’ve ever done. Take a chance; what do you have to lose?

I’m an avid believer in trying to live my life with no regrets, but if I do regret anything, I would rather it be something I have done, not something I haven’t.

Did you learn anything from writing your book?

So, so much. Like; I use, commas, when, there’s, absolutely, no, need!

Auto-correct is not always correct.

I type at the same speed old people make love. And finally, I’m nowhere near as funny as I think.J

Is there anything else you would like to say?

Have you ever been for a job interview and the interviewer closes with this question?

You are sitting there thinking – answer just answer, why aren’t you answering?

Can anyone else hear crickets?

Awkward…Ha, okay um, please go buy Promises Hurt. It’s released 2nd August and if you read it and hate it…well, who doesn’t like telling everyone they know that something sucks. But maybe, just maybe you’ll love it. It’s a win win!

About the author:

Hello…

I’m a little neurotic; I function on a tiny amount of sleep and a huge amount of caffeine. I love green skittles and have an irrational fear of stormy weather. When I’m not writing about super hot college guys, you can generally find me googling them…all in the name of research of course. I can be persuaded to do just about anything with the promise of a good book or a bottle of bubbles. Oh, and I also love to write.

Massive thanks to Elle for Taking part and for Susan getting the Interview done x
